As I told my forum members, this guy acts like I feel about having been able to make him. I worked on the timing for ages and I still don't think it's quite right. I also only just figured out how to shade halfway decently, so please bring on the nitpicking critiques. I promise to only weep uncontrollably for a little while. :D

I've gone ahead and removed the walking in and out frames. I also kept the cartwheel itself in the smallest possible space so he's basically flipping in place. It just looks more balanced this way (and cuter in a row ;)).

Thats awesome, great work. :)
Very good! I'm glad to see you've taken a crack at shading, which is nicely done but could be blended a little bit better. I like the animation, the timing seems good to me though I could do with a few more frames in the cartwheel to make it smoother, and I didn't get to see the walk in/walk out version but I think that the way you have it looped now is perfect

Keep it up! I'm seeing a ton of improvement and can't wait to see what you come up with next! :D

Yay! Thank you so much for your detailed comment, Zikes. I'm definitely going to work on less extreme shading (just uploaded a version with a less blindingly light corner, but that's just the beginning).

My original idea had more interim phases for the flip itself, but once I did the basic frames, I found I kind of liked the abruptness. It has a sort of impressionistic verisimilitude. Either that or I'm just talking out my ass to cover for my abject laziness. :giggle:

In any case, you've inspired me to give it a shot and see how it comes out. Nothing wrong with two versions, after all. Thanks again, Zikes. I really appreciate your helpful input.
lol it's pretty easy to tell what's going on so you can go ahead and leave it impressionistically verisimilitudinous :D

There are a couple more things about the shading that catch my eye on closer inspection, though. It looks like you're shading using a square pattern instead of a circle, making a sharp corner that causes the highlight to look a little too solid. And I recall when I first saw the emote that for some reason the highlight appeared to me to be more of a spot of color on the emote rather than an actual highlight but I couldn't pinpoint exactly why, and it just hit me a little while ago: you have the highlight rotating with the emote. You have to remember that if you were to think of an emote as an actual 3D object it would be a solid color, it's when you shine a light on it that you get that highlighted/shadowed effect that you have to shade for. When the emote goes into a cartwheel the light source would remain in the same spot (upper left hand corner) while the emote spins, so the highlight & shading should remain the same while the face spins around :)

Zikes, have I ever told you you're a damn genius? Just real quick and dirty I softened the sharp edges of the shading and kept the light spot up top during the flip. What do you think? Thank you so much. :worship:
Much better!

I've been browsing around FF a little and noticed you've been making more emotes than you're letting on, I think you need to get them over here right away :shakefist:

Oh no, no. One must be picky over here among the pros, you see.
Ah but that's how you get all the good critiques ;p

I agree with Zikes on this, liv. Get them smilies from FF over here. Pronto!
