Show Your Icon Love!

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 17, 2006, 11:26 AM

In the past 6 days since I've been browsing all the Icon sections assiduously, I've noticed a disturbing trend: the download to comment/fave ratio for icons is insanely disproportionate.  It's not uncommon to see figures like 2000 downloads, 5 comments, 2 faves.

That means literally thousands of people like the art enough to snag it for themselves, but not enough to express a word of appreciation.  Granted, many of those downloaders may be visitors, but I'm sure there are at least hundreds of dA members among them.

I suspect it's the eternal battle between art and artisanship  at the heart of this.  If you use it, you're less inclined to comment on it as art, less inclined to notice the artist, less inclined to thank him or her for beautifying your daily routine.

So, this is my appeal to all y'all icon lovers out there: say something!  Support the artist, show your love, reject the hoary old distinctions between art for use and art for viewing.  You don't have to wax poetic.  Even an "Oo! Cool! Using it." would be a vast improvement over the eerie silence that reigns now.

To get a feel for some of the gorgeousness you might have missed out on in the Icons gallery, check out Skin Deep, an article by abhimanyughoshal and ipholio which showcases customization gems.

Oh, and don't be shy about noting me any suggestions you have for DD's anywhere in the Icons gallery.  This is an equal opportunity operation here.  :)

i am very proud to say i'm amongst the people who comment EVERYTHING they see =D (which is probably why i barely browse around dA: i'd end up having commented in every artist in a single gallery's deviations at least once) lol

i know. that's why i every once in a while (when i have about...-enough- time) i browse around the galleries i have posted pics on, and a couple galleries some others have posted on. my favourite has always been all the emote-ish galleries, cause they're always meant to make you laugh =D

I hate having to leave for weekends and not seeing journals like this one on time..
It's a really great journal, i just saw =BoffinbraiN's stamp, i think everyone should put it in their journals, as a support for this action..
As much as i love seeing alot of M in my message center, more of them i like nice, constructive, funny, interesting, ect. comments..
Especially with icons, people spend alot of time on them, not rarely it takes a couple of months to finish entire pack, and they don't get any kind of satisfaction for what they do.. I mean, c'mon, people, you use their stuff for free, leave a comment, and fav anything you download and use for your personal pleasure..
Some people don't realise how commetning on deviations can be fun
btw, 696 comments on my :counter-strike: shows how much i love commenting.. :giggle:

I hear ya, man. As you know, I've benefited a huge amount from the hard work of the emoticonist community, and it's clear from the download rates that thousands of people are benefiting from all the iconists' talent and skill. I think there needs to be a change of mindset, really: express appreciation for people's labour, no matter what section it's been upload to.

I can't think of one to DD right now, but I do know that you're doing an awesome job.
I also support the comments on icons. Someone should make a stamp for it.. I'm not a subscriber and I'm a little lazy so... =D

..Who would do it?

Sadly, that is something you see a lot in the whole Customizations category: people use stuff without asking or even commenting.

Also, sometimes it takes a while to get enough watchers who regularly comment on your work. Don't give up! I've got my eye on you now.

It has! Totally. I don't really modify the defaults on my own laptop much, so I don't have the personal experience with the other icons that I do with emotes. I'm educating myself now. :D

True that. It's just particularly noticeable with downloadable art, but yeah, you see it with view-comment-fave ratios too.

This applys to all art really. (except it would be the favorite to comment ratio) I'm glad you made a journal about this, people really need to show appretiation for the work that people do.

Agreed, its just like :melonhead-emotion:'s rant about faves, quite annoying to an artist, to have your art loved, but nothing said to show WHY they love it, or that they use it

Exactly. I think people think it's either "Kewl!1" or some long, detailed critique they don't feel qualified to post. But it doesn't have to be like that at all. A lot of times I'll focus just on one thing in particular that I really liked about the piece, and that's both positive and helpful to the artist just 'cause it helps him understand what aspects of his work are appealing.

I believe that the reason for this would tend to be that the majority of these people (specifically icons such as Dock and OS etc) are people from other sites. They wouldn't be members and are just here for the use of the items.

The other factor being that sometimes you must download something to see what its like, and you discover that its not all that good. Whilst you can be constructive, if its not what you expected you sometimes move on to something else.

Whilst I support commenting and favouriting (as you know!), there are a few fair enough reasons whilst this is probably happening.

I second that, most of iconists don't even reply to comments, they just upload them on alof of GUI forums and galleries..

I mentioned in the journal that I recognize a lot of the downloaders are visitors as opposed to members, but even if we assume that 90% of the downloads come from non-members, that leaves literally hundreds of deviants who take the icon and run, so to speak.

Good point about downloading just to see what it's like, but again, a short comment ("I downloaded it 'cause I liked x but found there was too much y") wouldn't take much time or be uncomfortably confrontational, imo. I think maybe people are too accustomed to treating icons/skins/etc. as a commodity, hence my appeal. :)

Nah, you do make some good points, and it is definitely an area on deviantART that is over looked and often "abused" as you have mentioned. But that's because it is such an unusual gallery, but hopefully journals like this will help!

Here's hoping! I'm thinking maybe we might could try something a little more pointed too, like a critique contest. I have no idea how to go about it (it just popped into my head right now), but it's worth contemplating.
